About this project

Our mission and our journey

What's Next has a clear goal: help teenagers and their parents understand the varied paths for Secondary II schools and dual VET system — with a break-down of the numerous full-time schools as well as the 240+ apprenticeship options and an honest assessment of how future-proof each profession is. We hope the availability of this information, along with the tools and resources on this website, will help teens decide the right path for them. Benjamin McKinley started this site with the sole focus on apprenticeships using an AI website builder during his trial apprenticeship working with AI at the Inselspital in Bern in April 2026. Since then, we have continued to expand the site to include all the paths available for teens leaving middle school and resources to support them. In August 2026, the first class of 8th grade students tested the site and gave valuable feedback. We hope to gain funding and partnerships to continue to expand and give teens the best site possible for making their first big step towards their future.

How we score future-readiness

Each profession gets a 1–5 score based on three factors: automation risk, demand trend, and adaptability. We rely on public sources such as berufsberatung.ch, SBFI/SEFRI, BFS, OECD and WEF.

What the badges mean

  • Strong

Solid demand and low automation risk — the profession is expected to stay relevant and grow over the next decade.

  • Solid

Stable outlook with some headwinds. The role will evolve, but skilled workers will remain in demand.

  • At risk

Higher exposure to automation or shrinking demand. Still viable, but plan for continuing education and specialisation.
