Schools

Full-time schools after compulsory school

Not everyone can reach their career goals through an apprenticeship. These are the full-time school routes at upper-secondary level in Switzerland — what they lead to, how long they take and who they suit.

What comes after Secondary I school?

After compulsory school, roughly two thirds of Swiss teenagers start a dual apprenticeship: three or four days a week in a host company, one or two at vocational school. The other route is to stay in school full time. Full-time schools give you more general education, a later start to working life and, in most cases, no apprentice wage — but several of them still end with a recognised professional qualification.

The full-time school routes

Gymnasium / Gymnase-Collège / Liceo / Gimnasi

The academic route. Broad general education with a specialist profile, aimed at students who enjoy studying and want to go to university.

Duration
4 years (short form) or 6 years (long form)
Getting in
Cantonal entrance exam or strong grades plus a school recommendation, then a probationary term
Leads to
Gymnasial Matura — largely open access to universities and ETH/EPFL

FMS / ECG — specialised school

A general education with a professional focus: health, social work, education, art or communication. Includes placements and prepares you for higher professional schools.

Duration
3 years, plus about 1 year for the Specialised Matura
Getting in
Cantonal admission, similar to the Gymnasium but usually with slightly lower requirements
Leads to
Specialised School Certificate (Fachmittelschulausweis); with an extra practical year and project, the Specialised Matura (Fachmaturität) for universities of applied sciences and teacher education
learn more

Commercial and IT middle schools (HMS/WMS, IMS)

A full-time school version of the commercial or IT apprenticeship: school-based lessons plus a long internship, all under one roof.

Duration
3–4 years including the internship year
Getting in
Cantonal admission by exam or grades
Leads to
A federal EFZ/CFC (Kauffrau/Kaufmann or Informatik) together with the Vocational Matura
learn more

Full-time vocational schools (Lehrwerkstätten, écoles de métiers)

You learn the trade in a school workshop instead of a host company — common in mechanics, electronics, watchmaking, IT, design and crafts. Useful if you cannot find an apprenticeship place or want a broader technical grounding.

Duration
3–4 years
Getting in
Application and aptitude test at the school
Leads to
The same federal EFZ/CFC as a company-based apprenticeship, often with the Vocational Matura
learn more

Transition programmes (bridge year, 10th school year)

A year to catch up, mature or decide: school-based bridge years, preparatory courses, integration and language courses, motivation semesters and pre-apprenticeships.

Duration
1 year
Getting in
Cantonal or school application; some places prioritise students without a solution after compulsory school
Leads to
An apprenticeship place, a full-time school, or a stronger school record

Full-time school or apprenticeship?

Neither route is a dead end — Switzerland's system is built so you can change direction later.

Money

Apprentices earn a wage from day one. Full-time school students usually pay only modest fees but earn nothing; grants (Stipendien) exist in every canton.

How you learn

School suits people who like reading, writing and theory. An apprenticeship suits people who learn by doing and want real responsibility early.

What comes after

Matura → university. Specialised Matura and Vocational Matura → universities of applied sciences. EFZ → higher vocational education (HF, federal diplomas), and via the Passerelle exam even university.

Changing your mind

You can add a Vocational Matura after an EFZ, take the Passerelle to university, or start an apprenticeship after a Gymnasium — often with a shortened contract.
